In various towns in southern Lake Maracaibo (El Batey, Bobures, Gibraltar, Santa Maria, and some others) live direct heirs of those Africans brought to the area as slaves of the sugar cane and cocoa plantations during the Spanish colony in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.
